the two computers are connected through a router for the internet ability on each, now how can I hook up the brother hl1440 to print from both?

First, I am assuming the printer has either USB or parallel interfaces.
1. You need to install its driver into one of your computer.
2. After installation, on that computer, share the printer
3. Go to the other computer, look up the shared printer and added that as remote printer
4. You should be able to print from both computers
P.S. If your printer is USB interface, get a printer server (see below link)
