Main thing is that FF supports tabbed browsing that is not a feature of IE6. But it is a feature of IE7. So, after IE7 is released the use of FF may get reduced.
Moreover, Internet Explorer is the only browser that supports VBScript.

FF[Firefox] is mulöti platform, means that u can use same browser on both windows and linux etc. IE[Internet Explorer] is only for windows and MAC[IE 5.5]. FF is smaller then IE and can fit on an USB drive, so have ur browser and setting with u all the time.

Firefox tends to be faster, more secure and supports tabbed browsing amongst other features missing from Internet Explorer.
Personally, I think Opera is better than either of them as it is fast, secure, supports tabbed browsing, has an integrated email client, supports RSS feeds, IRC chat, and more.
The problem all alternative browsers run into sooner or later, is that some sites do not work very well on them. Whilst it is ironic that this is because of errors (and deliberate practice) on Microsofts part, it does mean that Internet Explorer is required to access some sites.
As both Opera and Firefox are free you have nothing to lose in downloading and installing them, and making your own mind up.
