Is there a way to get a manual car out of a stuck 2nd gear?
I’m guessing my old (‘95) stick shift Rodeo 4×4 is tired. It was working perfectly this afternoon, but tonight when I backed out of my parking space, it “put itself” into 2nd gear and refused to come out. What would cause this? Will it be expensive to repair, or should I prepare my bank account to start shelling out car payments? (I’ve been driving sticks for 15-20 yrs, by the way) HELP!

Sounds like there is something seriously wrong in your Rodeo. Probably a synchronizer or something like that. You are looking at an expensive fix. You’ll need to take it to a transmission shop unless you have a friend that is good with transmissions to get it fixed.

If only I knew. Maybe I’d then be a clutch answerer.

I had a VW Fox do this also, it stuck in 3rd. I removed the transmission, tore it down an found synchronizers bad and 3rd gear itself bad it cost me $400 in parts and about 10 man hours of my labor to repair it. If you’re not mechanically inclined, take it to a transmission shop it will cost you anywhere from $800 to $1800 to have it rebuilt.
Personal experience.

Either you are out of transmission fluid, or you need some work on your transmission. It would probably be cheaper in the long run to buy a new car. We had to do that once. Our 94 Buick tranny went caflooey on us, and it was actually cheaper to trade in the car with a broken transmission, on another used car. We got a 2000 Regal.
The reason it cost less is because, to fix or replace a transmission, is going to cost about $1200.00 to $1500.00, so trading it in, gives you monthly payments on a newer car without having to throw out all that big money on a tired car that may break down again soon.
