how do I go about setting up home networking if I have satellite internet service (direcway). What do I have to buy etc.

I’m looking for discussions or forums about home computing?

I live in the southern Philippines and, notwithstanding today, I am totally isolated from modern home computing. I am about to install a satellite dish and modem to obtain the Internet. I’d like to buy a state of the art PC to go with it, but I also want to be within the current technological mainstream in case I have troubles with certain components and have to fix them locally.

- DSL is not avilable at once ( it takes about a year to have my cable also it cost 45$ monthly for 128kb/s )

When do you think the US will have free high speed Internet access?

I read that because so many other countries telephone service was so far behind the US for years, cell phones were more numerous overseas than in the US. It is easier and cheaper to put up a cell tower than to run countless miles of telephone lines. Is that why we aren’t getting inexpensive high speed internet access in the US as fast as “less developed” countries? I live in the “boonies” and the only way I can get high speed Internet access is with a satellite which is expensive to hook up and incurs expensive monthly charges.

Is it the wireless card or the router?

I have a Toshiba Satellite R25-S3503 Tablet PC with a built in Intel PRO/Wireless 3945abg Network Card. The notebook runs Windows XP Professional with SP2. I also have a D-Link 524 Router. (Ver. D1)

My desktop connects perfectly to the internet and so does my laptop when using the ethernet cable. The problem is when I try to go wireless.

I have restarted the router, upgraded and downgraded the firmware, resetted the router. I have run ipconfig on my laptop and it says there is an internal error, that a device in the system is not functioning. (Yes, the wireless button is on). I tried toggling it off and on to no avail. I checked device manager, the event log. Nothing.

The only time my wireless comes on is when I first start the computer. It’s on for at most 2 hours and then it shuts off. In the Network Connections, it doesn’t say NOT CONNECTED. It says DISABLED. So I tried to enable it and it doesn’t work. I called DLINK and Toshiba. I rebooted and recovered. What do I do?
In order to save battery life, the computer can shut off the Network Card. I disabled that function. I am sitting about 1.5 feet from the router and still no service. I allowed my uncle (Computer Technician) to provide remote assistance using MSN. Once he was done, he told me to restart the computer. But that’s the thing. THE CONNECTION ALWAYS COMES UP WHEN I RESTART. The same happened when I called D-Link and Toshiba. They did whatever and told me to restart. Of course it came up, but for about 45 minutes.

I called Toshiba for the third time today and they finally suggested I go to a Toshiba Certified Repair Company. The thing is, I am leaving for college on Wednesday so I can’t exactly afford time to allow them to keep and repair my laptop. Is there anything I am not doing? Is it the router? Is the adapter? Would they just replace the computer or parts?
